Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 3.0 D-4D Invincible

For:
Revamped version of Toyota's iconic full-size 4x4 offers masses of space, generous levels of kit and a good blend of on- and off-road ability. Build quality should be impressive, and the cabin is much improved.

Against:
Legendary off-road capability takes precedence over on-road performance. It only really makes sense if your needs are more Sahara than Surrey.

Performance

The heavyweight Toyota is never going to be a speed merchant, but the uprated 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine hauls it along smartly. The 171bhp unit delivers 302lb ft of pull and doesn't need to be worked at speed, making this a pleasant motorway cruiser. The 4.0 V6 offers better performance but is very thirsty.

Ride & handling

Compared to rivals from BMW and Volvo, the Land Cruiser wallows through corners and pitches untidily over big bumps. Add in vague steering and the result is an unimpressive drive. The payback comes off-road, where the Toyota mud-plugs with the best, helped by features including optional hill-start and hill-descent control systems.

Refinement

The strong engine allied with optional automatic gearbox makes the Toyota a surprisingly refined cruiser, even if it sounds raucous accelerating hard from standstill. Road noise is subdued, but there is a good deal of wind rustling around the windscreen at higher speeds.

Buying & owning

Diesel models will depreciate less than petrol models, holding on to around half their original value after three years, which makes them a better investment than many rivals. Recent revisions have improved fuel economy, to 30mpg for manuals and 31.4mpg for automatics, but they still both attract the top rate of company car tax.

Quality & reliability

The Land Cruiser's reputation is founded upon its build quality and durability. In recent years Toyota has scored highly both in the JD Power customer satisfaction survey and our Used Car Reliability Survey, and the Toyota should live up to this billing. The quality of fixtures and fittings is now much better than before.

Safety & security

Every Land Cruiser gets eight airbags as standard, and a number of systems to help keep you on the straight and narrow - including braking assistance and, on some models, an electronic stability control system. This model also improves on its predecessor's security by offering deadlocks as standard.

Behind the wheel

Previous Land Cruisers' interiors allowed function to triumph over form; not this one. It can't match a BMW X5 for style, but the dashboard is logically laid out and quality materials ensure a feeling of solidity pervades the cabin. It's easy to find a good driving position in the supportive seat, too.

Space & practicality

This Toyota is one of the most spacious off-roaders you can buy. Even the three-door version has enough space for five adults and all their luggage, while five-door models feature a third row of seats in the boot, which can be folded out of the way. The second row of seats splits and folds, too, increasing the Land Cruiser's versatility.

Equipment

Equipment levels are a Land Cruiser forté. Now even base LC3 models have alloy wheels, cruise control, air-con and remote central locking. The opulent LC4 models gain satellite-navigation, electrically adjustable seats, leather upholstery and wood trim, while Invincible models get Bluetooth mobil phone connectivity and a rear-parking monitor.
